Seeing as it seems nobody's willing to do a game to introduce new ARCers to tabletop gaming, I've decided that, given enough interest, I'll run a Pathfinder one-shot session at the Icebreaker. I'm basically making up the setting and story outline right now, and I'd like to gauge interest.

I will need: 1-2 relatively experienced players, who will be playing with some plot-induced handicaps. Priority on good roleplayers over powergamers.
I'll also need another 3-5 people to fill out the party, with highest priority going to new players.

In the little town of Homefront came a stranger one fine day
Didn't talk to those around him, and he hates the month of may
He was cold and dark and livid, and he wanted to be sure
That he robbed the people plainly with the pistol that he wore

Then the RCMP ranger who was stationed there arose
He got up on his psychic horse and then the stranger froze
The horse it neighed and galloped and the stranger hit the floor
for the ranger's horse was deadly and had beaten him before

Beaten hi

I recommend an experienced player as a Paladin, to act as a guide, and Newbies to play Cleric or Druid, because they are overpowered and impossible to fuck up and do badly.

No. This is a one-shot. I don't want the players to power through everything and feel like they're being talked down to by some douche in shining chainmail.

I want them to have power, and to feel the consequences of their actions.

Hell, I might even pull a punch or two.

Love.
You can learn all the math in the 'verse.
But you take a boat in the air that you don't love.
She'll shake you off just as sure as the turn of the worlds.
Love keeps her in the air when she ought to fall down.
Tells you she's hurting before she keels.
Makes her a home.

I was thinking I build a fighter, wizard, rogue and cleric for the new players and let the experienced ones bring their own to the game... with no restrictions...

Except for the fact that you start at level 1, and entirely without equipment.

What about Gunslinger's gunsmith class feature?

Classes that get equipment as a class feature...

Well, you'll see, but you won't be starting with it. Wink

NOTE: The starting without equipment thing will only apply for the two most experienced players. Think of it as playing on hard mode.

Keep the experienced players from having tier-1 classes should prevent the party from destroying the adventure. As for the new players, a balanced spread of pre-builts is definitely a good idea.

As for the equipment thing, it really depends on the character class. No matter the experience, a fighter starting naked will do a lot worse than a rogue or a wizard under the same conditions. If everybody starts naked, then fighters in particular suffer.
If only the experienced players are naked, yet they're allowed to bring whatever sheet they want, then there's a good chance they'll show up as naked full-casting bear druids.

So, to both prevent accidental plot-destruction, and to save the experienced player's trouble of being forced to hold back, I recommend that tier-1 classes be significantly restricted in numbers, and be kept in the new players' hands. Additionally, it would be good roleplay-example for the experienced players to play naked fighters or something equally useless.

So no tier ones for experienced players? How about I just pick two people and approve their sheets personally?
