Before the sellsword can react, you scramble away and run out the tavern door. Covered in filth, blood and vomit, you head for the Imperial Palace, the greatest building in the city.

You stumble into the grand Reichminster Palace of Tronerburg three hours late, ranting incoherently about "assassination jaguars" and the supposed murders of your father and grandfather at the hands of shadowy babies. Despite your soiled clothing and distinct musk of "eau d'peasant scum", you retain the bearing and vocabulary of a high-born son. It is because of this, and this only that the first ring of guards around the palace allow you entry.

Four guards bar the open passage into the presence chamber. The first two, in mail and morions, carry ornately decorated arquebuses. The second pair are in full plate armour, wielding vicious looking polearms. As you approach, the halberdiers cross their weapons, blocking entry.

Just as the guardsman is about to put out half your teeth with the butt of his polearm, a rotund man dressed in the red and gold of the Imperial House Hohenbirtten, shoulders his way to you. With a languid flick of his wrist, he shoos the guards away.

"No, no no! The Emperor is expecting this one!"

He leans in close, wrinkling his nose at the reek of ale and vomit which emanates from you.

"Yes, you young man, are three hours late for your presentation to the Emperor. Give thanks that his Imperial Majesty is a merciful man. Now, how shall I announce you?"

The man is clearly some kind of court functionary or other. It is, no doubt, his duty to announce your arrival to the Emperor. For that, he will need your first name and the name of your noble house...

Care to remind me what they are?

(whether he is, in fact, a lord or not is not to be argued. he is 8'10", and saying otherwise might be hazardous to your health. so you kinda just go with it. also armed with his Patented BFS 9000.)

Your entrance is duly announced.

"Isaac, Freiherr von Mann-Einhalb, Your Imperial Majesty."

The two guards allow you to pass. The bureaucrat leads you through the sumptuously decorated audience chamber as two dozen more halberdiers snap to attention. The fat little functionary stops twenty paces away from the throne and bows to a wiry, balding man in his fifties, brooding atop the black eagle throne of the Holy Empire. He bids you do the same.

"Mein herr, you are in the presence of Maxim II, of House Hohenbirtten, Duke of Estrick and Master of the Senate, Courts, Fleets and Armies of the Holy Empire."

The Emperor leans forward with a single sniff. It is clear that even from fifteen metres away, he can smell the odious bouquet issuing from your body. His expression hardens even more.

"So you are the new lord, an inadequate inheritor to be sure. I had hopes for you, not high hopes mind, but expectations nonetheless. Instead you come to me three hours late, reeking of cheap beer and sin. Even from here, I can see the misrule and desolation you will bring to your lands."

The Emperor commands three dozen guards in full plate to file into the room.

"I am afraid this one will not do. I will give his lands and title to some other highborn boy of more responsible mind. Seize this one, try not to kill him."

You are now surrounded by nearly forty guards in full armour.
