So I'd like to run a game this summer. I'd like it to be geared to novices or people okay with low optimization. A key constraint that I have to work with is that I don't have a lot of time. Here are some game parameters:
- The game will be using DnD 3.5 rules.
- I'd like to stick to core + the Monster Manuals, Savage Species, and monsters from other books
- Starting off low middle (~4th level) and leveling to maybe 8-10. You'll level fast, but as fast as in the heavy metal campaign for those that played it.
- Everyone plays as a non-humanoid (using the Savage Species monster race level progression rules and buying off level adjustment as in the Unearthed Arcana)
- Probably a gestalt campaign. But your monster level progression has to be one half of your gestalt.
- As in all my campaigns
The Rule of Cool is always in effect.
The campaign:
For thousands of years the world of Monsterra had lived in peace. It wasn't always that way. There was a time when monsters warred with the humans who sowed the seeds of destruction throughout Monsterra. Monsters feared the naked ape. Monster killed his fellow monster. No one was safe. But there began a new age when the ancient God Beasts rose and conquered the humans. The savage pink apes were cowed and soon they only remained in human farms to feed those of monsterkind who require the brains, hearts, and blood of man.
Then, after years of peace, Monsterra exploded.
Scattered groups of refugees escaped Monsterra through astral portals and tried to make lives for themselves in other worlds. Many worlds were hostile and killed the fleeing monsters no sooner than they arrived. One of these worlds was Terra - a land filled with terrible humans. They had killed all the monsters on their world and had forgotten that they had ever existed. They forgot magic. Worst of all, they forgot how to dream.
It is in this new world, in the sewers beneath the human cities, that the children of Monsterra try to make a new life for themselves. They are hungry. They live without sunlight. All they have is their dreams.
The PCs will be playing either a refugee from Monsterra or possibly a monster hidden among humans in Terra. I'd like there to be at least a couple characters from Monsterra though. Monsterra was a magical world with technology typical of a sword-and-sorcery setting. Terra has Victorian-era steampunk level technology, but magic is hidden and thought to not exist. Displaying magic in public in Terra can get a character imprisoned, experimented on, or killed.
Although we're dealing with non-standard races, I'd like to be able to keep the game relatively noob friendly for any beginners or novices that want to play. If you have any questions about the rules I can explain things to you and show you some of the non-core books like Savage Species and the Monster Manuals 2,3, ect. The core rules can be found for free here:
http://www.d20srd.org/I've kept aside some spots for people I know who want to play, but I imagine a lot of people jumping in and dropping out due to circumstance. I guess I'm mostly just announcing that I'll be around in the spring running a game. If there's space you can jump in. I'm not sure if I can handle more than half a dozen people, though. I'd like everyone to be a monster character. Feel free to take something out of the core monster manual (
http://www.d20srd.org/indexes/monsters.htm) or any other book you have access to, although I think MMI-IV and SS should give you enough to pick from. If you really want to play a humanoid character you can, but you can't gestalt. Some monster level progressions in the SS book are pretty weak, so I'm willing to customize them to make them more playable.
