So I'd like to run a game this summer. I'd like it to be geared to novices or people okay with low optimization. A key constraint that I have to work with is that I don't have a lot of time. Here are some game parameters:

- The game will be using DnD 3.5 rules.
- I'd like to stick to core + the Monster Manuals, Savage Species, and monsters from other books
- Starting off low middle (~4th level) and leveling to maybe 8-10. You'll level fast, but as fast as in the heavy metal campaign for those that played it.
- Everyone plays as a non-humanoid (using the Savage Species monster race level progression rules and buying off level adjustment as in the Unearthed Arcana)
- Probably a gestalt campaign. But your monster level progression has to be one half of your gestalt.
- As in all my campaigns The Rule of Cool is always in effect.

The campaign:

For thousands of years the world of Monsterra had lived in peace. It wasn't always that way. There was a time when monsters warred with the humans who sowed the seeds of destruction throughout Monsterra. Monsters feared the naked ape. Monster killed his fellow monster. No one was safe. But there began a new age when the ancient God Beasts rose and conquered the humans. The savage pink apes were cowed and soon they only remained in human farms to feed those of monsterkind who require the brains, hearts, and blood of man.
Then, after years of peace, Monsterra exploded.
Scattered groups of refugees escaped Monsterra through astral portals and tried to make lives for themselves in other worlds. Many worlds were hostile and killed the fleeing monsters no sooner than they arrived. One of these worlds was Terra - a land filled with terrible humans. They had killed all the monsters on their world and had forgotten that they had ever existed. They forgot magic. Worst of all, they forgot how to dream.
It is in this new world, in the sewers beneath the human cities, that the children of Monsterra try to make a new life for themselves. They are hungry. They live without sunlight. All they have is their dreams.

The PCs will be playing either a refugee from Monsterra or possibly a monster hidden among humans in Terra. I'd like there to be at least a couple characters from Monsterra though. Monsterra was a magical world with technology typical of a sword-and-sorcery setting. Terra has Victorian-era steampunk level technology, but magic is hidden and thought to not exist. Displaying magic in public in Terra can get a character imprisoned, experimented on, or killed.

Although we're dealing with non-standard races, I'd like to be able to keep the game relatively noob friendly for any beginners or novices that want to play. If you have any questions about the rules I can explain things to you and show you some of the non-core books like Savage Species and the Monster Manuals 2,3, ect. The core rules can be found for free here: http://www.d20srd.org/

I've kept aside some spots for people I know who want to play, but I imagine a lot of people jumping in and dropping out due to circumstance. I guess I'm mostly just announcing that I'll be around in the spring running a game. If there's space you can jump in. I'm not sure if I can handle more than half a dozen people, though. I'd like everyone to be a monster character. Feel free to take something out of the core monster manual (http://www.d20srd.org/indexes/monsters.htm) or any other book you have access to, although I think MMI-IV and SS should give you enough to pick from. If you really want to play a humanoid character you can, but you can't gestalt. Some monster level progressions in the SS book are pretty weak, so I'm willing to customize them to make them more playable.

If you're interested give me an elevator pitch of what your character is all about. Specifically I'd like to know what kind of monster you want to play. 4 character levels isn't a lot, but it should be enough to get you started on a gnoll, neophyte mindflayer, or a baby griffon or something.

For character you can do what you want, but I'd really like to see some irony. Like a pixie barbarian, or a ogre bard or something. I'm not aiming for a super combat intensive campaign - I'd rather people did something fun, cool, or unexpected with their characters.

i'm definitely down for this, but most savage species races (at least, out of MM1) don't do much for wisdom (i'm intending to play a cleric) -- could I make a minor change like this: switch intelligence bonus to wisdom bonus?

yeah no problem. Also you can take from any of the monster manuals. If there's no monster racial progression in Savage Species then we can custom make one. The monster races rules are so messed that I'm basically willing to let people custom build their monster progression on an per individual basis.

sounds doable. may or may not be able for reasons of job, but i'll try nonetheless.
could I roll up a
half dragon/cleric 1,
half dragon/cleric 2,
half dragon/cleric 3,
crusader 1 /cleric 4? or, do you want creatures with racial levels specifically? I can also tone him down to be less optimized if necessary.

Not sure how my Summer is looking for gaming right now, so I can't promise that I'll have time for another game. But if you need any paperwork done, ie. monster class progressions or suitable monster types, please let me know, because I enjoy that kind of thing for some sick reason.

The choice to go gestalt was motivated for two reasons:
1) to let characters get one half of their gestalt for effective character levels lost due to level adjustment. So if you have LA +3, instead of having 1 HD and and ECL of 4, you'll have 3 levels of one half of your gestalt and the other half would be three null levels of level adjustment, and one HD of full gestalt.
2) to give characters the option of advancing as monsters while being able to take character levels instead of forcing them to decide between the two.

So I'd like one half of your gestalt to be monster. But if you're a half dragon and there's no monster racial progression for that, just let one half your gestalt be dragon type monster advancement:
http://www.d20srd.org/srd/improvingMonsters.htm#increasingHitDice
So for every full gestalt HD you get you'll get one half character level, and one half dragon (d12 hit points, fighter BAB, 6 skills per level, ect.)

Does that sound cool?

There is a level advancement for the half-dragon in the races of dragon book. Races of destiny also has a lot of level advancements for monstrous races.

I am interested in joining as jelly swashbuckler. The problem is that all D&D oozes are Int 1 and I failed to find PC progression for any.

Thank you. Unfortunately Conflagration ooze is as far as you can get from jelly.
Though now I am tempted to make some jelly and set it on fire.
