[Iron Wall]

Conall Dunham was a satisfied man. Since he had kept it safe, none of his men had yet been eaten by the crazy wild beast, or beasts, roaming around the encampment's exterior. He had sincerely hoped that Hossie wouldn't require any of his men to go up on the walls - construction workers were always undervalued, a fact he recalled from back home. Nobody ever thought the burly and hard-working men and women were anything but meatheads.

"Derek! What the HELL? I told you not to slap my ass anymore!"

Well, maybe some of them...

"But it's right in my damned face, Elise!"

Yeah, some of them probably were.

"Would you smack Hossie's ass if it were right in your face? I thought not!"

Another different man replied to Elise from a different work-site, his face red from laughter. "With Derek? You never know!"

Conall tuned out the rest of his workers' antics. They were entitled to some fun and games, considering how hard they were being worked.

Tower one is quickly put up, and a circle around it cleared. The second tower is put up but it takes more time so the third tower can't be put up. Nothing approaches the construction site, and the men don't find anything else.

The egg is probably that of a reptilian creature, due to its location on the ground and the fact that it was left unguarded. None of the topsoil is refinable, you're going to have to dig much deeper to get to refinable stone. Judging by the  tracks, claw marks and descriptions from the hunting party this is some sort of reptilian alpha predator.

((OK everyone before we continue, we've done 6 in game days of one(ish) action a day posting. Does anyone want to go back to multiple small actions a day?))

(I like the system we currently have, but a bunch of small actions a day would be good if a major event came to our attention (EG. the reptilian alpha predator breaks into our camp, we're contacted by intelligent life, etc.). For today, a bunch of small actions would be a nice change of pace.)

"Bones!"

Greenberg ran up to the sheriff, carrying the egg with him. "I've got a hypothesis on this egg, and if I'm correct, we might all be in deep shit. This egg belongs to a reptilian life form, and from the descriptions provided to me by Lorenzo's workers, they were attacked by a huge reptilian predator. If these two are the one and the same, that means your men stumbled upon a clutch of the mother's eggs. Get these eggs as far away from the colony as you can, into the treeline. Send men to do this who have training with firearms, and in a large group for protection. Following that, stay away from the eggs, and report to me should you find more. I'm not 100% sure that these eggs are the same species as the predator, but we can't be too safe - one of these things ate four men the other day, and I'd rather not test our luck."

Bones replies to the distressed doctor:
"I have a better idea: If this thing wants us et, let's lay a little trap: we put them in the open near the camp, and use thermal nightvision to look at it when it comes by." he points to the rather excessive machineguns. "My tommy's and I'll rip it a new asshole at 1000 meters. Bob, Frank, get to it. Workers, I'm gonna put these all in a little clutch in the corridor. with any luck, this thing'll guard its eggs Nobody goes out today. Redeploy the machineguns so our trap goes without a hitch at the end of the day. Then put 'em back. Lexa, Barb, keep watch over the other areas while the rest of us gun that bastard down."

Hossie clapped the british cop on the back when he heard the plan. It sounded like big game hunting, all proper-like to him, with equal amounts cunning and heavy firepower.

Greenberg listened to Bones' plan, his frown deepening as the Sheriff's explanation continued. He was openly shaking his head by the time the man had finished.

"Bait," Greenberg said, "and gun turrets. If I could list the number of ways in which this plan could go-"

"Ah laike this plan sohn!" said Hossie, clapping Bones on the back. "Ah made a damnfaahn choice when I made you sheriff. Why, Ah think that ah maight join in on this here little hunt'a yers."

Greenberg simply stared between the two men, his mouth forming words that he was unable to speak. He threw his hands up in the air, surrendering. "Fine, if the two of you want to play heroes, I'll let you. Just remember what I told you about the creature, and come to me if anything comes up. I'll be in the lander with my assistants. First Lorenzo, now Bones and Hossie, he thought to himself as he walked off. Sometimes I think that the sane ones in this colony are dwindling day by day.

He found Rice and Shirozuka by the site for the future laboratory. "Gather any fragile equipment," he said, "and meet me in the lander. The sheriff has this hare-brained idea to kill the predator using its own eggs as bait, and I want nothing to do with it. Even if I did, I'd just be getting in the way - never fired a gun in my life. So, let's wait until this whole thing has blown over."

[With that, Greenberg, Shirozuka and Rice go inside the lander for cover.]

Lorenzo happens to wander close by Greenberg and his team, looking noticeably more sober and dejected than before. The experience with the giant man-eating lizard has rattled him severely; it may be a while before he's back to his old self.

"I, uh, I think I can help you amigos out, for a while," he says uncertainly. "I know biology, especially plant biology. Maybe...that can be good for you?"

Greenberg raised an eyebrow, unable to help himself. This wasn't the cocksure Lorenzo that had nearly burned the forest down on the first day; this man seemed to have lost nearly all of his usual bravado. Greenberg contemplated his offer for a moment, glancing over at Rice and Shirozuka; the two of them shrugged in deference to his opinion.

"Alright," Greenberg said, his tone gentle, yet unmistakably clear. "An extra set of hands will be good, we're in the process of constructing our lab. I do have a set of conditions, however. When working with us, I am the team leader. You won't try out any experiments or proceed with any wild ideas without my approval first. These are my assistants, Samantha Rice and Yamato Shirozuka. They are your colleagues, not your hirelings or subordinates. You will work together, not for each other. Should you have any questions or discover anything unusual, come straight to me. As long as we understand each other and cooperate, we'll get along fine." He crossed his arms. "Understood?"

"Of course," says Lorenzo, getting down to work. He spends several moments reviewing whatever documentation Greenberg might have. "Oh, so that's what the blue plants do! Hmm...ideas..."
