((On a side note, can we train people off of a roll, and add D6's to our rolls based on how many skilled labourers assist? -- success = 5 or 6 for this special roll, with one roll for how many we get? (just a straight roll for that, so if you roll 6, you get six colonists to volunteer for such training. maybe have 1-2 = failure, 3-4 = partial success 5-6=full success for each training session. training taking a day or two, depending on how complex the task is?))

((ok I've been thinking of rules for this for a while I'll publish them up here now. So the official training rules are.
Rolling for NPCs.
To recruit the any NPCs roll 1d6, or 2d6(roll two and add them) if you have any leadership skills, the result is the number of people you get. NPCs roll as a group, 1 die for each untrained NPC and 2 dice for any NPC with appropriate training.
You take the highest die of all dice rolled; however if every 1 or 2 subtracts one non 1 or 2 die starting with the highest die.
Untrained workers can be trained to gain a specialization. To train a worker you roll one die, two if your training them in your specialization. Compare the highest roll to the following scale: 1-2 = failure, 3-4 = partial success 5-6=full success. It requires one full success or two partial successes to train a worker. ))

[Roll to analyze the fruit pile for half the day, then roll to spend the other half examining the tracks around the lander and hypothesize on the fauna that made said tracks]

Rolled 2d6: 1, 3

Rolled 2d6: 5, 5

The you take samples of the fruit and put them in your machine to be analyzed, it looks like they'll be done some time tomorrow.

Looking at the tracks left by the fauna you can tell that it is some sort of land predator, quadrupedal and built to be able to climb trees. Based on the accounts from the search party you doubt this is the same creature that they encountered.

You begin to recon the area, but you don't get too fare on foot before one of your men eats some of the local fruit and collapses forcing you to head back to camp early.

With a beep, the machine finished its analysis of the fruits. "Alright," said Greenberg as he looked at the results, "let's see what we've got here..."

He turned pale.

Sprinting as fast as he could, Greenberg told Lorenzo the results of the analysis. "Roughly 25% - pant - are poisonous - pant - don't eat the - pant - purple ones - pant - contain poison resembling - pant - cyanide - pant - the others are fine, just don't eat the purple ones!!"

Leaving Lorenzo in a wide eyed state, Greenberg repeated the news to Hossie, Doctor Macfinn, Bones, and the tracker, McDouglas, making sure to give the doctor the machine's readout for a detailed analysis of the fruits' biology. Between them, they should be able to get the word out quickly enough before someone gets themselves poisoned, thought Greenberg, slumping over to wheeze for breath. Damn, but he wasn't as young as he used to be. Between new plants and fruits, analyzing the soil, and those ominous tracks appearing in the night, he couldn't hope to handle everything on his own.

He'd need a few helping hands if he wanted to get as much done as he could.

Greenberg walked over to the ragtag group of colonists that milled about during the day while waiting for something to do.

"Good morning, everyone!" said Greenberg in his best lecture hall voice.

The colonists turned to face him, wondering why the older gentleman with the curly white hair was addressing them.

"My name is Professor Paul Greenberg, and I am the lead xenobiologist of this expedition. My job is to analyze the alien florae and faunae of this planet, so that we may learn how to adapt and survive as a thriving colony. However, there are many new developments here in camp, and I can't handle everything myself; I'm only one man. I am in need of a few assistants, for whom I will provide proper training and supervision. Your education won't be easy, but it will be immensely fulfilling, as the position of xenobiologist is one of the most important positions in a fledgling colony such as this one. With your assistance, we will be able to handle anything this planet can throw at us, and create one of the greatest examples of colonization ever seen in history! Anyone who is interested, please come talk to me. No previous experience is required, I will accept anyone, regardless of education or experience!"

The colonists paused for a moment after the speech was finished, then looked about themselves a bit to see who was interested before going back to their former activities. Greenberg watched impassively before heading over to the lander to investigate the new tracks that had appeared overnight. No rush, thought Greenberg. They just need a bit of time to consider my offer, I should get one or two assistants by the end of the day.

He reached the tracks, and crouched down to observe the new additions to the ones from the night before last. Half an hour went by as he lost himself in sketching out the tracks in minute detail, only snapping out of his reverie when he heard someone close behind him.

"Professor Greenberg!"

Putting his pencil behind his ear, Greenberg stood up, brushing off his pants. That'll be them now, he though to himself. Let's see how many I -

[Roll for number of assistants recruited]

Rolled 1d6: 2

Greenberg saw a young brunette woman with a smattering of freckles across the bridge of her nose, as well as a tall man who appeared to be of Japanese descent. About the number I was expecting, Greenberg thought. The woman seems to be a college senior at the absolute oldest, the man looks to be in his... mid-twenties?"Right," he said. "I take it you two are here regarding the assistant position?"

"Yes," the woman replied, "although I don't have much experience, I only took biology in high school."

The Japanese man merely nodded.

"That's alright," said Greenberg, "even a little education is better than none at all. Your names are..?"

"Samantha Rice," said the woman, shaking Greenberg's hand with a grip solid enough to crack his knuckles. Damn, but if she isn't stronger than she looks, he thought to himself.

"Yamato Shirozuka," said the Japanese man in a slight accent, shaking Greenberg's hand smoothly. "Graduate of University of Tokyo, former accountant."

"Pleasure," said Greenberg. "Now then, let's get started." He beckoned the two over to the nearby tracks and crouched down once again. "Take a look at these animal tracks. Note the deep furrows at the ends of the prints, how they're caused by long claws. What we're dealing with is potentially a predator, or the animal could merely use these claws in self defense. There are a number of hypotheses, but by working our way through them, we..."

[Roll to educate Rice and Shirozuka for the rest of the day, and roll to analyze the new tracks in the meantime]

(( Yeah sorry, I thought I had specified that but I just went back and checked and I hadn't. ))

Conall sighed in frustration and blearily rubbed at his eyes.

"Cows couldn't tear up roofs. Why couldn't we have cows? Damnit." He shook his head, eyeing the wrecked roof. It'd take hours just to clean up the goddamn mess the thing, whatever it was, had left behind.

Ah well.

It was just as well - some of those newbies that Hossie had forced on him hadn't a clue what they were doing, and a good deal of the roofing had been pretty shoddy. This would be a good chance to fix that, and ensure the work was done properly, and that the roof wouldn't leak on them when the skies opened up as they seemed apt to do.

With a clap, he gathered around his dozen workers. He offered them all an encouraging and friendly smile. "Looks like our house guests didn't like the work we did the other day," he began to a chorus of frustrated laughter and grins.

One of the men, a rough looking sort with sandy blond hair and a chiseled jawline replied, "Big sonuvabitch if he could get at the roof."

A petite (but, as Conall had seen, surprisingly strong) woman with a permanently mischievous grin on her face replied, "What makes you think it's a he? Could be we pissed off some mommy and built it near her home, or nest, or whatever."

Jawline was about to reply before Conall raised a hand and cut in. "Whatever gender it is, one thing is clear: it's an asshole. Ruining all our good honest work like that, that's just not right. I'll be talking to the Governor later about getting some protection for the buildings at night. For now, though, I figure this is a good opportunity to give all of you some proper education on how roofing and building in general is going to be done around here."

"Shit, kid! I've been doing construction since before you were sucking on your Mommy's tits," jawline jeered derisively.

"Is that so? You can be my assistant then, gramps. I can fab you a cane, if you like," Conall said to a mix of laughter and chuckles. The blond man came forward, glaring dangerously at him, and Conall slapped his back. "I need a foreman, anyways, and looks like you just took the job. Provided you're as old and experienced as you say you are," he added after a second with a wry grin. He stared back into the taller man's glower, who growled in disgust and stepped to Conall's side, folding his arms and daring anyone else to laugh at him.

"Right. As soon as we're done, we'll get back to work."

Several hours later, after the training and work, Conall searched the camp and found Hossie. He offered the governor a brisk, friendly nod and said, "We'll be needing some protection for the encampment at night, Hossie. Big beasts wandering around. I don't want any of my people eaten. Normally, I'd only worry about coyotes and the like running off with beasts, but it seems to me that anything that can tear off most of a roof is worth worrying over. At the very least, we should see what the hell is making all these tracks."

Hossie nodded in agreement with the engineer's suggestion.

"Yer' absolutely raight Mr. Dunham. Ah've already been givin' the idea some thinkin'. I got some folk puttin' together some big blocks'a hardwood t'use as a palisade. Unfortunately, the fabber insists on usin' them metres instead'a proper feet an' inches, so we'll have t'go by those."

The Texan turned to face the outer perimeter of the colony, pointing out spots on the ground as he went along.

"Ah'm thinkin'  that we stack three blocks on top'a each other fer the inner shell, and four fer the outer one, maybe two metres apaht. We fill in the gap with rubble oah cee-ment, then put somma th' trained volunteers up on the top with shotguns and laights. That should keep mosta them critters out and frankly, we faind anythin' that jumps 15 feet, I think those idjits in the Colonial Authoriteh maight have landed us on the wrong planet."

Lorenzo peers at Greenberg as he breathlessly warns him about the purple fruits. "Oh, yes, those things! Um..." He regards the sick enforcer as he is brought into the doctor's makeshift clinic. "Yes, we have, uh, encountered this problem the hard way. Your warning is appreciated though!"

Going back to his quarters he spends half an hour crafting a crude sign which has a picture of the offending fruit and 'Do not eat!' written in large letters.

Then he goes for breakfast and tries to rouse some interest in helping him farm. "Aha, my fellow colonists! Humanity can stand proud on the foundation we shall build today! For mother Earth and the glory of humanity!"

Your assistants are half trained, but more training is needed for them to be specialized.

It seems that the large animal from the previous day returned, being chased by a much large predator; if the lander wasn't sound proofed you're sure you would have heard it. There are also several tracks that you would call insectoid if not for the size of them. Finally there are tracks leading from the lake and back, some sort of four legged amphibious creature.
