I checked the server files and it said that the difficulty was set to 1 (out of 3; 0 being peaceful mode). I went ahead and changed it to 3 like what we were supposed to have:

  • The server difficulty is set to VERY HARD. This will not change. Make shelters, make sure to torch everything, and keep yourself safe. If you die due to a creeper/skeleton/zombie I will not reimburse your items. If you die due to a bug, I will reimburse your items.

Spawn rate is incredibly high, monsters are really strong and you lose a stupid amount of health from fall damage now

Enjoy

Not only that but you'd better find food (and lots of it) within 7-8 minutes of spawn or you'll starve to death

Server changes:

  • I fixed map_0 so that it's fully completed and centered around the original spawn point (sorry to the person who made map_0, but you barely used yours). To make your own map_0, simply make your map on a crafting table but shift-click before taking the map out. Alternatively there are extra copies of map_0 in the storehouse of Outset village
  • The 5 starter kits have been restored and upgraded to have iron tools instead of stone tools, and 20 chicken instead of 5 bread to accommodate for the new difficulty
  • I've removed access to the Nether for now. Some new things will be put in the Nether in 1.9 and the easiest way to implement them would be to make a reset beforehand. Portals still exist in the overworld but they won't work. Once 1.9 is out then I'll put the Nether back up, but in the meantime if you need any netherrack, glowstone or anything like that just ask.
  • There's been talk about whether or not we should put Runecraft back in the server. We still don't know for sure yet but if you want fast transportation I highly encourage you use the railways!
  • The (currently nonexistent) runecraft chamber in Outset village will be changed into a magic chamber. Apparently we're getting enchantments and potions soon!

I dug up the list of current players (not necessarily the ones that are whitelisted, but it's anyone who has played since the start of the new server). Feel free to edit the OP and add this list if you want

I'm looking at the server logs and it says that a user named 'ChromeoXi' keeps trying to connect to the server. Except he/she can't because of the whitelist. Does anyone know who this person is? This isn't the first time that this has happened by the way.

Hey everyone,

I've put together a fun little scavenger hunt for you guys to do. I invented this game to bring more activity to the server, but I also made it to encourage exploring the world and seeing other people's projects.

If you manage to successfully complete it then you can have your hands on this treasure:

-20 Iron Blocks
-10 Gold Blocks
-7 Diamond Blocks (that's 63 Diamonds - almost a full stack!)
-a full stack of Cakes
-3 Golden Apples (eating one will heal 5 Food Points and give you fast health regeneration for 30 seconds)

Here's how you play - around the world you'll come across signs like these
(ignore this one, I'm just showing it to use as an example and I'm taking it down later):

Get it? The first coordinate will be the X coordinate and the second will be the Z coordinate. Press F3 on your keyboard to display your current coordinates (if you didn't already know). Just follow the coordinates written on the sign until you find a new sign with a new location written on it. The second line, written in words, is meant to be a hint to help you find the sign easier. Just a straightforward hint - there are no riddles in my game! I can't write riddles.

There are approximately 10 signs in total, give or take a few. They're scattered around the world, but I've placed them on specific landmarks so you don't have to worry about going deep into a random cave or anything like that. None of the coords go below -1000 or over 1000 (X/Z).
(When you find a sign, please don't destroy them or rewrite them with fake coordinates.)

One last note, though - it's going to be very hard. You CAN die from starvation now - and the food meter goes down very fast in hard mode - so make sure to bring lots and lots of food with you. Also make sure to equip yourself with armor and weapons so you don't get killed by monsters on the way. Team up with your friends if you like! If you happen to need any extra food or materials to craft armor, help yourself to whatever resources you need in Outset Village. It's free!
(protip: If you need a quick and easy way to get to Outset Village, all you have to do is destroy your bed/spawn point and kill yourself. Your spawn point will be reset to the village. If you don't want to sacrifice your items then you can find the village at x=-210, z=190.)

That's all then. You'll find the first sign on the Bulletin Board in the village. There is no time limit.

Happy hunting, and good luck!

Tested, it works fine, and gives a good insight on what people did on the server.

He was nice enough to keep the items in the chest though. Thanks for testing out the game Vincent! The treasure is still up for grabs!

Whelp, after several (game) days of journeying and one particularly evil jumping puzzle, I am happy to say that I am the first winner of Sam's scavenging contest :3

Next thing you know, Juan will be calling himself the "Planet-King" and threatening war with the French...

I guess I can request here:

May I invite another friend of mine, "Gaelin".

He's alright, he administrates a Ventrilo server with me and he's looking to play some Minecraft off and on.

"No, you under-educated, over-bred, slack-jawed poltro- I mean, Your Majesty. Never again would we have to declare bankruptcy! Spain can once again fulfill its destiny; to TAKE OVER THE WORLD!"
