Wtf, you guys are actually planning on fighting... in the Rotunda...?

I'll come.... Ref...  There have been no set rules or anything, if you guys just wanna go until someone says Banana that's K and I can keep watch or something.

But seriously, this requires so much more thought and organizing than you guys even know.  Unless you all have and I have just missed it or something.

So when are we talking?  I still have to work out tomorrow (today, friday), play a game of SC2 with a friend and make something to eat for y'all tonight...

I don't use/have any boxing gloves but I have some other gloves and cloth for someone's hands.  I cannot for the life of me find my mouthguard!
BRO just 2 pairs of 16 oz gloves and motuh gaurd and fight 3 3 min rounds just boxing how hard is that?? we go into KO TKO or rounds done

Tian, calm your shit and learn to post properly.  What are you, twelve?  This isn't MSN/facebook chat.
I said I do not have any gloves, but I have alternatives.
I said I cannot find my mouth guard. I will not have time to get one for tomorrow.

If you've never done something like this before, I can understand you may not know the complexities of pulling something like this off, but really treat this seriously.

uhh i kickbox for 4 years and i spar 3-4 times a week it isnt as complicated as you think...

Well, good for you.
Let the rest of us, who are not you, take this seriously, since we are not you.
We, not you, have not done this four years, nor do we do this often, since we are not you.
Perhaps, what is simple for you, whom we are not, is not simple for us, who are not you.

I mean a fight club, or more over this small stint of fighting.

Do you even understand what I'm saying at all?

it is just tmr night.... how hard is it?? tarek brings a pair of gloves i have a pair and 2 people fight at a time and they can share use our gloves. as for rules just use the standard boxing rules. who ever dont have mouthguard can use my headgear or just go light. this isnt a serious fight club this is for fun. iam sure majority people in arc isnt expert fighters gonna argue over the small details of the rules.

Not that I'm expecting to be trying too hard to murder eachother, but damnit, let's be safe about it.

You surely know what you're doing, but the rest of us don't, alright? Some of us don't want to end up causing permanent damage because nobody paid attention to what they're doing.

Yes, it's just for fun, but that doesn't mean we aren't going to be atleast a little serious about not accidentally punching out an eye. I'm the little shit that started talking about this whole idea, I'm all for it, but I will not have it end in security crackdowns and hospital trips.

Dude, I am not sure who exactly you are addressing but I'm getting a lot of hate for some misunderstanding.  I'd like to have it off text as its hard to have an actual conversation like this.

Yeah sure, you've gone to martial arts classes for 4 years, but I don't see how this has anything to do with a fight club.  It helps you know how to act and what definitely NOT to do because you know to to cripple the opponent in a single hit.

Read up there on my posts, and tian misreading my posts and telling me to bring gloves (which he does to tarek too I believe) when we clearly state that Tarek has ONE set of gloves.  I have gloves that are NOT boxing gloves, but if someone wants I can bring them but I doubt they'd be of any use.

Its like I'm saying I don't have any peanut butter but I could bring chocolate sauce if that'll help.
Tain says "No man its not hard just bring peanut butter sauce bro"

The whole act of doing this at SFU and not somewhere separate caught me off-guard.  Tian acting like its no big deal.  I've never fought at SFU so I'd have no clue if this is an easy thing to pull off.  Heck its the two-week break before summer courses start up, so it might be pretty simple.

If you guys have ALL done this before, then there shouldn't be any of the questions I've seen asked before.  I'm trying to be helpful.

Also Jesse, I don't see tian as taking this seriously.  I do.  This is literally breaking the first rule of any "normal" activity: no one gets hurt.

But like I said before, if we could sit down face-to-face I'm sure a lot of this would clear up as I probably am not conveying the best meaning over simple text on a screen.

sorry bro i think i fked up on my what iam trying to say and you misunderstood me. first when i said dont take as seriously i meant dont take this as a serious fight and try to have fun. and 2 tarek as a pair ( he confirm he has a pair) and i have pair and other people can use our gloves if they have to since maximun of 2 people can fight at the same time due to the lack of space. and i am experianced and i ref and also stop a fight because i can tell if someone is in trouble. btw i wasnt trying to tell you to bring gloves i was just trying to say buy another mouthguard but this was before you told me u were busy tmr and dont have time. lastly no one is hating on you.

dies a little inside

this is exactly what I've been trying to say.

Maybe I'm just too tired to type correctly.

YESS THAT WHAT I MEANT  when i say not take it seriously i meant not taking it as a seriously fight and have fun. of course i dont want anyone to get hurt. we will just fight with like 20 percent power like jsut for fun nothing serious. and ofc anyone dont know the basic me tarek maybe even alex and eric can show you. since they all ahve some background training. like it is expected you do warmup and some basic trianing first before the fight. is like do you see poeple run marathons or a jog without stretching first.

yess my use of not take it serious meaning to have fun by all means people should learn the basics and know the safety procautions. seeing how matt posted something about warmups and basics earlier i thought u guys already establish we were going to do that already. and dont worry we all nice people there and i am sure no one want to punch out anyone's eye out or anything it is just for FUN. like i jsut wanna have a good time sparring tarek or eric cuz knowing they have some background training in other martial arts. like dont be stress out over this and argued over this. this is suppose to be a fun event for people to enjoy.

I think I'm going to sleep soon.  I don't know if I can handle more of this everyone misunderstanding.

Posting this so that everyone is on the same page:

How to fight is maybe half of this whole thing.  We need someone to watch.  This is the Rotunda, yes? There's two sides in the hallway and the glass doors.  We need a method of watching and alerting and everyone knowing how to scramble their shirts/belts/shoes back on and get their gloves off.
I do not recommend headgear aside from the mouthguard.  Its a dead giveaway.  Gloves can usually be tossed ON someone's nearby jacket and no one asks.  So long as you don't need to talk mouth-guards are last-priority, they're easy to hide.

Rules of combat are usually written and EVERYONE gets a say in them.
Rules of conduct/etiquette are only ever verbal.

People with previous martial arts training/experience have a much better time grasping the thought of "taking a hit".  If someone hits you anywhere expected, do not immediately retaliate.  This seems simple but when you're in the moment, its very different.  Discipline helps, but there is a routine that everyone participates in so that everyone shows they can hold back when pissed off.  If you can't handle that, you don't fight.

Sparring is not the same thing as what I understand you guys want to do.  If you all just wanted to spar why not just go spar?  This is different (and that's the point).

We need to establish a code-word (usually Bananas). As soon as anyone says it, its over.  Do not ask why.  This is for everyone's safety.  Same goes if a ref calls it off.  Also, don't hit the ref.
So long as everyone follows the rules, we can all have fun with it.  Imagine someone gets mad or isn't careful and hits someone in the head, the balls, the chest (think heart-area) or the neck.  Game over.  Someone is now severely hurt.  We all just need to be careful, fighting is a crucial part of this yes, but its not all of it.

I should also mention everyone cuts their nails.  It seems so obvious (or unnecessary due to the gloves) but better to be safe than sorry.

So what time is this set for?

EDIT:
Stupid question, can anyone aside from someone logged in view this thread?  (like can someone lurk and just browse into the forums anonymously?)

completely agree with everything you said, sparring is exactly the same as a real fight EXCEPT both side holds back and do not go full power. in other words it is a controlled fight interms of power and also mercy wise. i  can kinda argue this is what we going to do.

Having this going on in the Rotunda during an official ARC event (the sleepover) is a not a good idea.

yes. besides that, anyone with an email address can register for an account.

I probably should not be acknowledging that this thread exists.

Okay I'll bring some gloves and rubber training knives, everyone else bring what they have and we'll mix and match as necessary. If you don't want to fight someone cause they're too big or too skilled then you don't have to. You don't have to have mouthguards if you don't want, but be prepared for chipped teeth and shredded up buccal cavities, or just don't do head contact and keep it to body and legs. (You can get mouthguards at the sports store at Lougheed town center, like sportchek or something.) Do whatever rules you and your partner are comfortable with as decided on a case-by-case basis.

I used to be in all kinds of martial arts clubs and fight clubs, formal and informal. I've watched fight clubs crash and burn or be incredibly awesome. I think the ARC can have a good night with this and that despite the chaos a naive natural order will emerge as long as everyone is generally respectful, which I think is the case with the people associated with the ARC.

That being said from now on we settle all disputes in the THUNDERDOME.
