So I've been hearing a lot of whispering in the shadows from people who want to engage in gentlemanly pugilism as a means of recreation. If we were more committed we could join boxing gyms and if we had more money we could take lessons somewhere, but there's a certain appeal to getting together in a parking lot with boxing gloves and just going nuts.

If you're interested then here's what we need:

1) a place to rumble - SFU will not do as the SFU security really hates fight clubs. You can download child pornography on SFU WiFi but to the devil with you if you dare to exchange gloved punches to the face in a consensual manner on SFU property. I know some outdoor locations down the hill, but we'll need cloaks to keep warm when we're not punching.

2) mouthguards - everyone needs a mouth guard, they're like 2 bucks at a sports store. When you train without a mouth guard you can get chipped teeth or the insides of your cheeks get shredded against your teeth. If you want to be able to eat comfortably get a mouthguard.

I have some gloves and I'm going to buy a few more. If you have gloves then bring them with you.

I'll try to ref to the best of my ability. I'm pretty much expecting that everyone will be ARC-level noobs so you probably don't have to worry about some 250 pound ripped guy showing up and using Blizzard Kung Fu to annihilate everyone who stands before him. I've seen it happen but we should be safe if we keep a low profile.

Post in this thread if you're interested. Also check out the ARC gym workout thread if you're interested in lawful exercise. The ARC gym workouts were most successful so check out the thread to see when this semester's days and times are, or just post your own availability.

This idea, I like it very much, though we need to lay out some basic guidelines and rules first.

I am intrigued. Though I guess mouthguards rule out biting.
Will it be just boxing or kicks too?

I'm in.
I might be able to find my old gloves somewhere.
Where is a sporting store that isn't some sort of crazy rip-off place?

I like this idea, though my boxing gloves are in Idaho. I can buy new ones, I need to punch people in the gut more anyways.

Can we be like all-american Zombie-killin Motocross star Chuck Greene and add bowie knives to our gloves?

Which days are we available?
Some of us (perhaps all of us) seems to have workouts on top of this.

Preferably we do it on the Friday or Thursday to give the wounds time to heal.

I'm good the entire Thursday this semester, and Friday afternoons.

I'd prefer thursday to friday.

As far as rules I figure there are no solid rules except for what people agree to ad hoc. I figure you can work this out on a person to person basis based on what you're comfortable with.

The canonical banned moves typically include the intentional use of these: groin attacks, eye attacks, bites, headbutts, boxing ears, knee-capping, joint destructions, pressure point strikes, throat strikes, mandible claw, fish hooks, small joint manipulation (bending single fingers, ect), hair pulling, rending with fingernails, spitting

Moves that are legal in some contests but are generally not for noobs: elbows, knees, stomping on head or body, chokes and strangles, pressure point holds, joint locks, neck cranks, suffocation with hand or chest, muscle strikes, nerve strikes, spinning backfists

Also I suggest avoiding kicks for the time being. They require skill to use effectively and they're fairly strong for those that do know how to use them. Using kicks would either disadvantage people who don't know how to kick or ensure that everyone goes home with aching shins and crotches.  But you're free to do whatever.

I can do Friday Afternoons, Thursdays I can do between 12:00 - 5:00.

I think to start off we'd only allowed to do boxing punches, then later on stuff like kicks, knees, elbows etc...can be gradually.

I can do Thursday afternoons pretty easily, though it'd have to be someplace close by...

I'd be fine for friday (day or) night fights. Have gloves from old karate lessons but they are open-hand gloves (i.e. inside of hand is exposed). Not sure if that disqualifies them.

Would probably only come every now and again anyway.

Well.

We still need a concrete location (not necessarily made of concrete) before we can beat each other senseless.

Any good ideas? Besides wandering out to the woods?

There's an abandoned parking lot down the hill near production way that might work. I'll scope it out early next week.

I co-host a radio show till 6:30 on fridays. Thursday would work better for me, but I can do friday after 6:30 PM, which would mean that we'll be out in the cold and in the dark.
